Parlando di arte multimediale, si può parlare di continuità con il passato, con la tradizione, o piuttosto di rottura?

L’atteggiamento di destrutturalizzazione è sempre quello, cambia solo la tecnica, che oggi è rappresentata dal mezzo telematico. Esiste una forte continuità con tutto il filone dell’avanguardia, dal futurismo al dadaismo, al collage, al costruttivismo, al Bauhaus fino all’arte programmata e cinetica degli anni ’60, e penso ai suoi casi migliori, come l’artista olandese László Moholy-Nagy. Continuità anche con il gruppo Fluxus (il movimento artistico degli anni ’60 composto da George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Ben Vautier, Ken Friedman, John Cage).Già allora si lavorava sulla possibilità di interazione con il mezzo e la Web art fa in fondo la stessa cosa.
Ormai da parecchi anni le biennali d’arte (ma anche di architettura) mostrano un gran numero di opere di video artisti. All’inizio quest’invasione aveva, o almeno così veniva percepita, un carattere di novità e di forza dirompente rispetto alle altre forme artistiche (pittura, scultura, soprattutto). Sebbene la video arte abbia origini ben più lontane (si pensi a agli anni ’60 di Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari, Bill Viola), è con la “maturazione” della TV e delle tecniche video che essa acquisisce maggior consapevolezza, grazie anche alle sperimentazioni dei videoclip e della pubblicità che esasperano il montaggio delle immagini, il ritmo sincopato e veloce, il rapporto con la musica e con altre forme espressive, prime fra tutte la fotografia e la musica.

Gli artisti digitali hanno solo sostituito il mouse con il pennello, oppure il nuovo mezzo tecnologico, il computer, costringe anche a ripensare il ruolo stesso dell’artista?

L’arte multimediale gode di una euforia per la scoperta del mezzo, il computer.
L’atteggiamento degli artisti multimediali, talvolta a livello inconscio, è da vecchi umanisti.
Il tentativo è quello di dimostrare che la scienza telematica è buona, che fa del bene all’uomo. Di umanizzare la tecnica. L’immagine assume le stimmate del mezzo che usa, sviluppa una relazione con il pubblico, che riconosce che il computer che è oramai diventato un oggetto comune. Credo che vi sia un tentativo di sviluppare una comunicazione allargata, frutto di un desiderio di apertura sociale, anche se con risultati molto estetizzanti.
Se esite una differenza va ritovata nel fatto che oggi l’avanguardia non è più autoesclusione, isolamento, produzione di un linguaggio esclusivo. L’arte telematica è comunicazione. L’arte digitale pone il problema di una vera interazione degli utenti col mezzo, che diviene parte dell’opera d’arte.

In che senso questa comunicazione ottiene risultati estetizzanti?

In generale, prevale l’euforia per la sperimentazione tecnica, soprattutto fra gli artisti italiani, e allo stesso tempo resiste ancora un gusto per la forma, per il bello, un retrogusto estetico che spesso comporta quello che io chiamo “anoressia dell’immagine”: in un mondo smaterializzato e smaterializzante, in cui la telematica produce ogni tipo di servizio a domicilio, l’uomo è immobilizzato, paralizzato, signore e schiavo del mezzo. Allora anche l’immagine che gli giunge è smaterializzata, appiattita, anoressica. In Italia soprattutto Edipo è molto forte e si impone.

Un passato ingombrante?

No, importante. Tutti in Italia in fondo fanno i conti con un proprio Edipo: chi con Benedetto Croce o Carlo Marx, io, ad esempio, faccio i conti con un napoletano, Totò. Edipo può essere un punto di forza o una debolezza. Può valere come stimolo. Il Italia si deve fare i conti con la tradizione, non si può prescindere dalla storia dell’arte. Gli americani hanno uno sguardo più libero. Guarda caso nella transavanguardia calda, rappresentata dagli europei e dagli italiani, esiste un atteggiamento culturale importante, noi lavoriamo nella citazione continua del passato, della storia dell’arte. Loro, gli americani, lavorano sulla citazione della cronaca.

Lei crede che abbia un senso esporre delle opere digitali, presenti anche su Internet, nei musei?
Perchè no. In fondo entrare nei musei è come sfogliare un catalogo.

Parlando di arte multimediale, si può parlare di continuità con il passato, con la tradizione, o piuttosto di rottura?

L’atteggiamento di destrutturalizzazione è sempre quello, cambia solo la tecnica, che oggi è rappresentata dal mezzo telematico. Esiste una forte continuità con tutto il filone dell’avanguardia, dal futurismo al dadaismo, al collage, al costruttivismo, al Bauhaus fino all’arte programmata e cinetica degli anni ’60, e penso ai suoi casi migliori, come l’artista olandese László Moholy-Nagy. Continuità anche con il gruppo Fluxus (il movimento artistico degli anni ’60 composto da George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, Ben Vautier, Ken Friedman, John Cage).Già allora si lavorava sulla possibilità di interazione con il mezzo e la Web art fa in fondo la stessa cosa.
Ormai da parecchi anni le biennali d’arte (ma anche di architettura) mostrano un gran numero di opere di video artisti. All’inizio quest’invasione aveva, o almeno così veniva percepita, un carattere di novità e di forza dirompente rispetto alle altre forme artistiche (pittura, scultura, soprattutto). Sebbene la video arte abbia origini ben più lontane (si pensi a agli anni ’60 di Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari, Bill Viola), è con la “maturazione” della TV e delle tecniche video che essa acquisisce maggior consapevolezza, grazie anche alle sperimentazioni dei videoclip e della pubblicità che esasperano il montaggio delle immagini, il ritmo sincopato e veloce, il rapporto con la musica e con altre forme espressive, prime fra tutte la fotografia e la musica.

Gli artisti digitali hanno solo sostituito il mouse con il pennello, oppure il nuovo mezzo tecnologico, il computer, costringe anche a ripensare il ruolo stesso dell’artista?

L’arte multimediale gode di una euforia per la scoperta del mezzo, il computer.
L’atteggiamento degli artisti multimediali, talvolta a livello inconscio, è da vecchi umanisti.
Il tentativo è quello di dimostrare che la scienza telematica è buona, che fa del bene all’uomo. Di umanizzare la tecnica. L’immagine assume le stimmate del mezzo che usa, sviluppa una relazione con il pubblico, che riconosce che il computer che è oramai diventato un oggetto comune. Credo che vi sia un tentativo di sviluppare una comunicazione allargata, frutto di un desiderio di apertura sociale, anche se con risultati molto estetizzanti.
Se esite una differenza va ritovata nel fatto che oggi l’avanguardia non è più autoesclusione, isolamento, produzione di un linguaggio esclusivo. L’arte telematica è comunicazione. L’arte digitale pone il problema di una vera interazione degli utenti col mezzo, che diviene parte dell’opera d’arte.

In che senso questa comunicazione ottiene risultati estetizzanti?

In generale, prevale l’euforia per la sperimentazione tecnica, soprattutto fra gli artisti italiani, e allo stesso tempo resiste ancora un gusto per la forma, per il bello, un retrogusto estetico che spesso comporta quello che io chiamo “anoressia dell’immagine”: in un mondo smaterializzato e smaterializzante, in cui la telematica produce ogni tipo di servizio a domicilio, l’uomo è immobilizzato, paralizzato, signore e schiavo del mezzo. Allora anche l’immagine che gli giunge è smaterializzata, appiattita, anoressica. In Italia soprattutto Edipo è molto forte e si impone.

Un passato ingombrante?

No, importante. Tutti in Italia in fondo fanno i conti con un proprio Edipo: chi con Benedetto Croce o Carlo Marx, io, ad esempio, faccio i conti con un napoletano, Totò. Edipo può essere un punto di forza o una debolezza. Può valere come stimolo. Il Italia si deve fare i conti con la tradizione, non si può prescindere dalla storia dell’arte. Gli americani hanno uno sguardo più libero. Guarda caso nella transavanguardia calda, rappresentata dagli europei e dagli italiani, esiste un atteggiamento culturale importante, noi lavoriamo nella citazione continua del passato, della storia dell’arte. Loro, gli americani, lavorano sulla citazione della cronaca.

Lei crede che abbia un senso esporre delle opere digitali, presenti anche su Internet, nei musei?
Perchè no. In fondo entrare nei musei è come sfogliare un catalogo.

Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy. The sources from which individual artists drew their theoretical arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time.
Abstract art, nonfigurative art, nonobjective art, and nonrepresentational art are loosely related terms. They are similar, but perhaps not of identical meaning.
Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial, or complete. Abstraction exists along a continuum. Even art that aims for verisimilitude of the highest degree can be said to be abstract, at least theoretically, since perfect representation is likely to be exceedingly elusive. Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. In geometric abstraction, for instance, one is unlikely to find references to naturalistic entities. Figurative art and total abstraction are almost mutually exclusive. But figurative and representational (or realistic) art often contains partial abstraction. Both geometric abstraction and lyrical abstraction are often totally abstract.

ASTRATTISMO e ARTE CONTEMPORANEA – multidisciplinarietà e multimodalità

L’astrattismo nasce dalla scelta degli artisti di negare la rappresentazione della realtà per esaltare i propri sentimenti attraverso forme, linee e colori. Punto di riferimento fondamentale è il testo di Wilhelm Worringer Astrazione ed empatia, del 1908, dove l’arte viene interpretata in base all’intenzionalità dell’artista. La forma viene intesa come risultato dell’incontro tra uomo e mondo, in un alternarsi di empatia, ovvero avvicinamento alla realtà, ed astrazione, cioè rifiuto della realtà.[1] Con il termine “astrattismo” vengono quindi spesso designate tutte le forme di espressione artistica visuale non figurative, dove non vi siano appigli che consentano di ricondurre l’immagine dipinta ad una qualsiasi rappresentazione della realtà, nemmeno mediata dalla sensibilità dell’artista come nel caso degli impressionisti. Tuttavia in alcune accezioni con “astrattismo” si intende (in senso restrittivo) solamente la ricerca della forma pura per tramite di colori e forme geometriche, come nelle opere di Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers e Mario Radice, mentre le altre esperienze non figurative vengono definite con nomi propri, quali espressionismo astratto informale e simili,Kandinskij iniziò da una pittura espressionistica con l’accentuazione del colore per passare ad una pittura completamente astratta priva di figure riconoscibili.

Il termine arte contemporanea si riferisce generalmente all’arte creata nel presente. L’uso dell’aggettivo generico “contemporanea” per definire l’arte dei nostri giorni è dovuto anche alla mancanza di una scuola artistica dominante o distinta riconosciuta da artisti, storici dell’arte e critici. L’espressione tende ad includere tutta l’arte creata dalla fine degli anni sessanta del XX secolo o, in alternativa, dalla presunta fine dell’arte moderna o periodo modernista fino ai giorni nostri (anche se al giorno d’oggi ci sono artisti che creano arte moderna ed altri che creano in pratica tutti gli stili o mode del passato).
L’arte creata o rappresentata dalla fine del modernismo è alcune volte chiamata arte postmoderna, tuttavia postmodernismo si può riferire sia al contesto storico che all’approccio estetico utilizzato; per di più molti lavori di artisti contemporanei non presentano quegli elementi chiave che caratterizzano l’estetica postmoderna, l’aggettivo contemporanea può quindi essere preferito perché più inclusivo. Come nelle ricerche critiche di altre discipline comunque, il termine contemporaneo indica che il periodo di interesse e di studio in oggetto non ha esaurito le sue spinte propulsive ma che, invece, sono ben vive nel presente e proprio per questo di difficile definizione. L’arte contemporanea è caratterizzata da opere prodotte con tecniche e linguaggi interdipendenti: videoarte, pittura, fotografia, scultura, arte digitale, disegno, musica, happening, fluxus, performance, installazioni.

Forse l’aspetto che definisce meglio l’arte contemporanea è la difficoltà di definirla criticamente. Prima della fine degli anni sessanta infatti la maggior parte delle opere poteva essere etichettata facilmente come frutto di una particolare scuola pittorica. Anche negli anni settanta e ottanta si possono notare certe tendenze come l’arte concettuale, performance art, arte femminista, pop art, graffiti. L’arte dopo l’era moderna si è trasformata seguendo anche i cambiamenti economici, globali, politici e socioculturali. La sempre maggior velocità e mole di scambi di idee, risorse economiche, informazioni e cultura intorno al globo avviene anche nel mondo dell’arte. Molte delle barriere e distinzioni all’interno dell’arte sono cadute contribuendo ad una vivacità e multidisciplinarità tipica dell’arte contemporanea che ne ha fatto spesso ragione d’essere.
